Step 1 of 3: Equipment
A two-story white house with a porch stands in a flat field behind wind-bent grasses and a row of leaning trees under a grey, rain-streaked sky.

A contractor quoting central AC in Hennepin County has to size the system for what this area actually runs against, not for a catalog median. 313 severe weather events were recorded in Hennepin County, Minnesota between 2015 and 2024. At that rate, severe weather is a routine operating condition, and a unit that is undersized or poorly installed will show the strain well before the end of its expected service life. Sealing, refrigerant charge, and equipment placement are all local questions here, not defaults a contractor can carry in from anywhere else.

Basement interior with concrete block walls, a beige electrical panel door mounted on the wall, a large galvanized sheet metal duct running floor to ceiling, and wooden shelves holding glass jars and cardboard boxes.

Ductwork laid down for the heating equipment of an earlier era was sized to move air at pressures and volumes that a modern central AC unit does not match. Half the homes in Hennepin County, Minnesota were built in 1973 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a new system here has to open and measure what is behind the walls before the equipment selection means anything, because duct capacity sets what the new unit can actually deliver. The electrical service matters too, but ductwork is where installs in this county most often require additional work beyond the unit itself.

What Gets Installed With a New Central AC

Isometric grey illustration of a cutaway single-story house showing interior rooms, ceiling ductwork connected to an indoor air handler, and an outdoor condenser unit linked by lines outside the wall.

The outdoor condenser unit sits outside the house, usually on a concrete pad at ground level, and houses the compressor and condenser coil. Inside, the air handler or furnace with its evaporator coil mounts in a utility closet, basement, or attic, pulling warm air from the house across the coil and pushing cooled air back through the home.

The refrigerant lines run between the two units, carrying refrigerant back and forth through the wall or exterior of the house. The thermostat mounts on an interior wall and gives the homeowner control over the whole system, signaling the equipment when to run and when to stop.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly what applies to your house and its existing setup.

Severe Weather Events in Hennepin County

Hennepin County weather puts real demand on cooling equipment, and that demand shapes what a proper installation here needs to handle. Sizing and specifying a central AC system without accounting for local conditions is how you get a unit that underperforms when it matters.
